Deacon Tom Sommers was born on December 19, 1941 in Baton Rouge, and is the son of the late Thomas G. and Evelyn B. Sommers. He has two sisters, one who lives in McKinney, TX and the other in Littleton, CO. He graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1959 and attended LSU for one year. He served in the U.S. Navy from February 1961 to January 1965. While in the Navy, Deacon Tom served in public relations as liason between the Navy and the public. After military service he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now UL Lafayette, graduating in 1968 with a B.A. in graphic design. Deacon Tom worked in the graphic design field until December 1997 when he was named editor of the Acadiana Catholic diocesan newspaper. He married the former Gloria Hoffpauir of Crowley in 1967 and they are the parents of two daughters and seven grandchildren.
Deacon Tom and his wife and his wife and children were received into the Catholic Church in November 1982. He began to feel a call to serve the Church as a deacon even before being received into the Church. He began deacon studies in 2000, and was ordained permanent deacon on September 9, 2006. His assignments have been: St. John the Baptist, Lyons Point; Immaculate Conception, Morse; St. Aloysius, Midland; St. John the Evangelist, Mermentau; and St. Margaret of Scotland, Estherwood. He also conducts a Communion Service every month at one of the local nursing homes.
Deacon Tom currently serves as assistant D.R.E. for Immaculate Conception, St. Aloysius, and St. John the Baptist. He is in the office on Thursdays from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Outside of office hours, please contact him on his cell phone for any of the following:
