Centennial News - Sunday, February 11, 2018 One Native Son to Another - On February 17, 2016, Pope Francis accepted the retirement of Bishop Michael Jarrell, who served as the sixth Bishop of Lafayette for over 13 years. At the same time, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Douglas Deshotel, previously an Auxiliary Bishop of Dallas, as the seventh Bishop of Lafayette. Bishop Jarrell, a native of Opelousas, and Bishop Deshotel, a native of Basile, follow in the footsteps of Bishop Jeanmard, a native of Breaux Bridge. Remarkably, in our 100 years as a diocese, over 50 of those years, have been led by a Bishop native to Acadiana.
